The Landscape Sketch

The Landscape Sketch

Two-part Workshop based on the landscape sketches of Camille Corot, (French, 1796-1875) an important figure in the “Plein Air” movement in the mid-1800s. As a trained neo-classicist, Corot’s Plein Air works presaged “impressionism” by breaking with tradition in working outdoors on small works as the basis for larger studio work. Our workshop begins with a brief look of his sketches on paper, paying keen attention to the stylistic variations used in the depiction of singular objects in a landscape (rocks, trees, mountains) and the more complex, multi-object compositions suggesting distance and atmosphere with the use of line, mass and tone. Our Catskills landscapes are ideal locations to reinterpret Corot’s approach to drawing the Italian and French countryside.
PART 1: Dry Media Greyscale (All Levels) DRAWING OBJECTS IN NATURE
PART 2: Dry or Wet Media Greyscale (All Levels) COMPOSITION

Collage Cut-Outs:
Exploring Henri Matisse

CREATE ORIGINAL CUT-OUTS INSPIRED BY MATISSE.
Multi-Media Collage (2 hours) with Karen Meneghin
REGISTER: $25.00 | 8 PERSONS MAX

IN THE LATE 1940s, HENRI MATISSE turned almost exclusively to cut paper collage. With scissors instead of his customary paintbrush, he began a series of cut-out forms of varying shapes and sizes — from the vegetal to the abstract — which he then arranged into lively compositions. Initially, these were of modest size but over time grew into mural or room-size works. As a brilliant final chapter in his long career, Matisse’s cut-outs reflect a renewed commitment to pure color and inventiveness of form.

Basic Materials + Studio Setups Provided.
SKILLS BUILDING: COLOR. SHAPES. COMPOSITION.
MATERIALS HANDLING: PENCILS. PAPER. SCISSORS. GLUE.

The Maritime Landscape with Ben Lussier

Join us at this unique Plein Air Workshop location in New York Harbor with Ben Lussier known for his stunning seascapes of Maine and Long Island coasts.

Governors Island has become a popular seasonal destination open to the public between May and September, attracting more than 800,000 visitors per year as of 2018. In addition to the 43-acre (17 ha) public park, Governors Island includes free arts and cultural events, as well as recreational activities. The island can only be accessed by ferries from Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The native Lenape originally referred to Governors Island as Paggank ("nut island"). The name was transliterated into the Dutch Noten Eylandt. then Anglicized into Nutten Island, before being renamed Governor's Island by the late 18th century. The island's use as a military installation dates to 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, when Continental Army troops raised defensive works on the island. From 1783 to 1966, the island was a United States Army post, serving mainly as a training ground for troops, though it also served as a strategic defense point during wartime. The island then served as a major United States Coast Guard installation until 1996.
