Exploring Henri Matisse

CREATE ORIGINAL CUT-OUTS INSPIRED BY MATISSE.

IN THE LATE 1940s, HENRI MATISSE turned almost exclusively to cut paper collage. With scissors instead of his customary paintbrush, he began a series of cut-out forms of varying shapes and sizes — from the vegetal to the abstract — which he then arranged into lively compositions. Initially, these were of modest size but over time grew into mural or room-size works. As a brilliant final chapter in his long career, Matisse’s cut-outs reflect a renewed commitment to pure color and inventiveness of form.

Basic Materials + Studio Setups Provided.

Exploring Paul Cézanne

Multi-media Sketch (2 hours) Instructed

Basic Sketch Materials + Studio Setups Provided
Taking inspiration from Cézanne, we’ll explore his free-form sketches of everyday objects with subtle notes of color to create original work. We’ll take you through the basics of mapping a simple composition in pencil to complete a basic drawing on paper in a single session. In subsequent sessions we’ll progress to full-color and more complex compositions in various media.
Each week will feature a variety of drawing and painting media (eg: gouache, pencil, watercolor).
All levels welcome. Progressive Skills Building and Materials Handling.

Taking inspiration from Cézanne, we’ll explore loose sketching of a “still life’ objects (apples, pears, etc.) with subtle notes of color, and work our way to more complex compositions with full-color in future sessions. We’ll take you through the stages of mapping a freeform sketch in pencil and slowly refine to a finish. We’ll help you choose subject and materials to complete a basic drawing on paper in a single session.

We’ll look at works by Paul Cézanne, from his pencil sketches with subtle notes of color to fully realized compositions for a basic understanding of his process. Working from a Cézanne-inspired still life or reference images, we’ll take you through the stages of mapping a still life sketch in pencil then work to a finish with added color notes to complete a sketch in one session (9 x 12).
