A New Relationship with Sea and Sky

America’s great harbors and thriving port cities gave rise to the nation’s cultural development for schools of maritime landscape painting and portraiture. Join us on Governor's Island, where history meets modern day New York — the dynamic Lower Manhattan skyline, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and waterfront. And rising 70 feet above sea-level, "The Hills" provide breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, making this an all-around opportunity to paint en Plein Air, inspired by the combined elements of landscape, architecture and water.

About the Workshop

During the 3-day Maritime Workshop with Ben Lussier on Governor’s Island, he will cover the stages of alla prima Plein Air air from start to finish with an emphasis on strong design and strategies for achieving the most powerful interpretation of your subject matter possible. Each day with begin with a demo followed by one-on-one instruction at each of our three painting locations (see below). Group texts are required to keep in communication regarding any changes to our painting locations, weather conditions and for safety considerations.

Workshop Perk: Patreon Critique
Included in the workshop fee is a post workshop final critique on Patreon. You’ll need to email images of your paintings from the workshop.

Governor’s Island, a former 18th century military base turned city park with stunning views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, offers ample opportunity to create paintings that bring together elements of landscape and architecture with water. Here you will learn how to simplify and alter complicated material to best suit your artistic purpose and discuss how to effectively use value, color, and edges to create a sense of light and atmosphere in your paintings. Each day will begin will be group demonstration in the morning followed by individual guidance at your easel as you work on your paintings through the afternoon. Instruction will be adjusted depending on experience and the workshop is suitable for painters at all levels.

Workshop Registration

Cost: $350.00  Limited enrollment: 12 artists
Fee includes a post-workshop final critique with Ben Lussier on Patreon
Materials list will be emailed with registration confirmation

A cell phone is required to communicate during the workshop in the event of schedule or location updates and the general safety of all participants

About the Artist

Benjamin Lussier is a landscape painter based in Brooklyn, New York. Lussier discovered his love for painting at an early age through the influence of his father, who taught him value, color, and composition throughout childhood and adolescence. A native of New England, Lussier draws on his love of rural landscape for his choice of subject matter and is especially inspired by coastal and maritime imagery.Demonstrating promising talent very early in his career, Ben has exhibited in numerous nationally juried exhibitions and Plein Air events and his paintings have been honored with multiple awards from the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

Lussier's work is available through the Grenning Gallery, Sag Harbor, NY; Elizabeth Moss Galleries in Portland, ME and the Lupine Gallery in Monhegan, ME.
