Workshop with Cynthia Rosen

LIVESTREAM + LIVE STUDIO at GALLERY 222

Spring in Atlanta

Cynthia chose this landscape reference photo taken at the Atlanta History Museum’s Garden while competing at the Olmsted [Plein Air] Invitational. Spring is always famously on display in Atlanta and this image notes a rich mix of native plants — dogwoods and azaleas line a stone pathway leading to a gazebo and outbuildings, beneath a deep green forest canopy. In the absence of direct sunlight and shadows, we know this is an afternoon setting by the high-contrast and backlit middleground.

Demo Painting

APRIL 30, 2022: LIVESTREAM + LIVE @ Gallery 222
Cynthia demonstrated a slow build of light and dark color masses using the palette knife and decided to simplify the geometric architectural features. Out went the white gazebo on the upper left, in competition with the lower right foreground mass of white azaleas. In its place, she invented a relationship between the two geometric buildings, framed and backlit by afternoon sun. Contrasting dark linear shapes of trees, trunks and limbs created interesting diagonals leading the eyes beyond the picture plane.

Painting in a field of limitless color, the ever changing light and sounds of a spinning world engages and challenges both perceptions and expression. No sooner do I embark on one path, when the road turns introducing new sights and inspirations, broadening my visual vocabulary with no end in sight.

We are pleased to host Cynthia Rosen, a nationally recognized painter and teacher, who’s vast body of work embraces all genres in addition to her expressionist plein air landscapes, captured in a kaleidoscope of colors with use of a palette knife. Cynthia’s work is represented in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide and she is a frequently invited artist and judge on the Plein Air circuit. Cynthia will lead a workshop in Normandy, “Following in the Footsteps of the Impressionists,” in Spring 2023.
